Chimneys represent very large potential air leaks, in part because of their size but also because they form unbroken pathways for air to move from the lowest levels of the house right up through the attic and out.
What to Do: The ways to stop or slow down air flow is to set up an obstruction INSIDE the chimney, and to seal or block with foam any cracks or gaps between the chimney and the surrounding floors or walls through which the chimney passes. Inside the Chimney: Close the damper in the chimney to slow air flow and reduce hot air from leaking out through the chimney. Around the chimney: Apply caulk or insulation foam (if fireproof) to block all holes on each floor that the chimney passes through. Learn more on our Fireplace page.
